Brewer-Porch Children’s Center has a long, rich tradition of building on children’s strengths with patience, care, and compassion.

It was established by the Alabama Legislature in 1970 to provide a model treatment program for Alabama’s special-needs children, adolescents, and their families.

Short-Term Treatment and Evaluation Program (STTEP)

The Short-Term Treatment and Evaluation Program (STTEP) provide a thorough evaluation of clients in a residential setting over a 60-90 day period.

It serves 10 children, ages 6 through 12, who are often at risk of disrupting less restrictive placements or who have required multiple hospitalizations.

Children are taught the skills necessary for them to return to their homes and become active and responsible members of their families and communities.

Daily Schedule

6:30 am: Wake up, complete morning routine, eat breakfast

8:00 am-12:00 pm: School day

12-1:00 pm: Lunch

1-2:00 pm: Educational group/individual work educating consumers on activities of daily living and improving basic living skills (anger management skills, sportsmanship, communicating feelings, interacting appropriately with authority figures, developing creative outlets, etc.)

2-3:00 pm: Menu choice/quiet time – Behavior during day determines whether children earn a free play period or earn quiet time, a period for reviewing the rules and reflecting on their behavior.

3-4:30 pm: Educational group/individual work educating consumers on activities of daily living and improving basic living skills

4:30-5:00 pm: Menu choice – play period where different levels of activities are earned based on behavior during day

5-6:00 pm: Dinner

6-8:30 pm: Therapeutic group activities, phone calls home, showering and preparing for bed

8:30-10:00 pm: Bedtime, based on age (later on weekends)
