The Karnatak University Library was established in 1950 along with the university on a small hall of Government Training College for men. Now it has independent building located behind "Gandhi Bhavan" surrounded by beautiful natural greenery. The building has a carpet area of 4030 sq. mtrs. It accommodates about 4 lakhs books in its four stack rooms and around 300 students at a time to read in the reading halls of the library. Library also provides reading facility for physically challenged student. A reading room near the entrance hall of library specially available for physically challenged users.

Dr. S.B. Patil is the University Librarian since April 2006. Prior to this present assignment, Dr. Patil has worked as the Deputy Librarian at the Gulbarga University Library, Gulbarga. He has more than 29 years of professional experience in the University library system.

Dr. R. M. Vatnal
Deputy Librarian
Dr. R M Vatnal obtained M.L.I.Sc. in April 1993 in First Class with second rank. He has worked in National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science (IISc,) Bangalore. He has made useful contributions in the area of creating and maintaining the home pages on the web.

Dr. A.N.Joshi
Deputy Librarian
Dr. A.N. Joshi completed her B.L.I.Sc and M.L.I.Sc from Karnatak University securing first rank and gold medals. She has completed her Ph.D in 2012 and has 25 articles to her credit published in various journals.

Various sections of library:
The construction of the first phase of building was completed in July 1981. The library moved to its new premises by the end of August 1981.
The present building (first phase) consists of the following work areas
1. Entrance Hall :
The property counter, the charging desk, the public catalogues, Internet browsing corner, computer section and the rare book collection are housed in the large entrance hall measuring about 1933 sq. ft
2. Browsing Hall:
The area of the Browsing Room is about 2,252 sq.ft. It is situated behind the Entrance Hall. At present the Browsing Hall houses the UN depositary centre.
3. Reading cum Stack Rooms (22,822 sq.ft)
Ground Floor:
To the left of the Browsing Room, on the Western side, a corridor leads to the Reading cum Stack Rooms.
A. Reading Rooms:
The building has two Reading Rooms one on the ground floor and the other on the first floor. These reading rooms accommodate about 200 readers at a time and have a carpet area of about 4,900 sq.ft
B. Stack Rooms:
Ground floor (17,975 sq. ft).
