The University of Pune was founded in February 1948 and the Department of Mathematics was started functioning in the same year.

The lectures were initially held in various colleges in Pune. The Department has been offering courses in Pure and Applied Mathematics for many years, a distinction that has blurred in the recent past.

The current topics of interest in the department are Algebra, Number Theory, Analysis and Discrete Mathematics.
