Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is a collegiate public state university established by the Government of Karnataka. Apart from a few notable exceptions, VTU has education authority in the state of Karnataka.

There are 208 colleges affiliated to it. The colleges are categorised as 'government', 'private-aided' and 'private-unaided' based on the type of funding. Some colleges are classified as 'minority linguistic' and 'minority religious' based on the minority status of languages and religions. These colleges are placed under 'autonomous' and 'non-autonomous category of institutions granted by UGC.
