Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology in the nation. The Govt. of India presented on the Institute, the Deemed to be University status (under University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956)) with impact from 26th June 2002. Accordingly, the Central Govt. by Act of Parliament (National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (29 of 2007)) announced VNIT Nagpur as an Institute of National Importance alongside every other Nit. The Act was brought into power from fifteenth August 2007.

Prior, the Institute was known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). The prime target of building up Regional Engineering Colleges was to give quality specialized instruction all through the nation and foster national mix.
