The WBBSE or West Bengal Board of Secondary Education was established in 1951 under an Act of the State Legislature called the West Bengal Secondary Education Act of 1950.

The Board is constituted with 65 members; the President is at the helm. Of the 65 members 36 are elected from amongst the teaching and non-teaching staff of the recognized institutions and the others are ex-officio members.
