The Advanced Eye Centre under Department of Ophthalmology of PGIMER (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research), Chandigarh was inaugurated on 18th March 2006 by the Honourable Vice President of India, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the august presence of the Union Health Minister and President of the PGIMER, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss

Since 1962, the department of Ophthalmology is engaged in providing ophthalmic care of the highest order not only to the people of Chandigarh and surrounding area but also to the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and the western Uttar Pradesh.

Major areas of thrust are training of residents, research and patient care. The centre runs several special clinics and services viz. Lens, Cornea, Uvea, Glaucoma, Retina and Vitreous, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Contact Lens & Low Vision Aids, Oculoplastic and Tumour Clinics.

For the first time in India, laser treatment of retinal diseases and glaucoma was started in July, 1989. Excellent patient care service is the most important objective of the centre.

The Advanced Eye Centre would continue to carry out relevant researches in eye diseases and has already made global impact by leadership role by devising novel strategies for the diabetic retinopathy, ocular tuberculosis, and retinopathy of prematurely and ocular infections.

The Advanced Eye Centre would aim to introduce very shortly for the first time in India, a multiplex molecular biologic diagnostic kit for detecting intraocular infections from a single drop of ocular fluid. The Centre has already filed four patients.

Its vision is to provide highest level of eye care services and is aiming to provide tele-screening for Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma and Retinopathy of Prematurity, the major causes of blindness emerging in developing societies.


Ophthalmology

The department operates OPD on all the days of the week except Sundays. It has 9 Special Clinics, which run on particular days.

Patients are redirected from Eye OPD to Special Clinic OPD. The department has an Operation Theatre, which conducts both Minor Operations and Major Operations.

The department has laboratories to conduct number of Tests and Procedures. Various registers are maintained in the department. All MLC cases are handled in the Hospital Emergency.
