Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi was one of the initial six Universities in India to start a Postgraduate instructing and research program in the field of Biotechnology in 1985. Since 1985, it was running as the Special Center for Biotechnology (CBT) under the joint sponsorship of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India

Considering the development of Biotechnology at a global level, its applications all in all circles of life and the huge commitments made by the workforce of the Center for Biotechnology, the Executive Council of JNU set out to lift the status of the Special Center for Biotechnology to that of a School of Biotechnology (SBT) in 2006. Throughout the years, Biotechnology program at JNU has built up itself as a main scholarly program both from the educating and research perspective. M.Sc. (Biotechnology)
