SJT errors invalidate foundation Programme scores

Almost 300 final years applying for the foundation programme have been disadvantaged by errors marking an application test, the Medical Schools Council has said.

About 1,250 SJT papers were affected by problems with the machine-marking system, revealed yesterday.

Of these, 298 final years were found to have received scores that were too low.

These marks will be adjusted.

However, this means that the whole algorithm matching 7,500 final years with foundation schools for their first jobs may need to be rerun by the UK Foundation Programme Office, which oversees the application process.

A similar issue was identified for the lowest scoring situational judgement test candidates earlier this month.

Errors in the machine-marking system led to incorrect scoring and if this had not been spotted in time, applicants could have been rejected from the foundation programme entirely.

The BMA has called for an independent review of this year’s application process, which used the situational judgement test for the first time.
