The Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute is a chief Institute of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) occupied with research and expansion exercises on sheep. It was set up in 1962 at Malpura in Rajasthan.

North Temperate Regional Station (NTRS) was built up in 1963 in mild area at Garsa, Kullu in Himachal Pradesh. The Southern Regional Research Center (SRRC) was built up in 1965 in sub mild area at Mannavanur in Tamil Nadu. Dry Region Campus (ARC) was built up in 1974 at Bikaner in parched district of Rajasthan. The Institute and its sub-stations have been working for improving the profitability of sheep by applying logical techniques and growing new innovations.

Northern Temperate Research Station (NTRS), Garsa

The North Temperate Regional Station (NTRS) of the Institute was begun at Garsa, Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh with the shared coordinated effort of Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Government of India and past Punjab Government (accordingly Himachal Pradesh) as a Sheep Breeding Farm in the year 1963 to care for the locale particular research for development of sheep.

Later on the station was exchanged to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and worked as the Regional Station of Institute for North Temperate Region of the nation. This station is situated at worldwide position of scope 31° 34' 47.9994" N (31.58° N) and longitude as 77° 12' 0" E (77.20° E) with normal yearly precipitation of around 840 mm in Himalayan Kullu valley. This station is situated at 1400-2100 meters above mean ocean level on the correct bank of Garsa stream.
