Re: Emergency Medicine in AIIMS

The aim of the Faculty and Staff of Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center, AIIMS is to provide state of the art compassionate patient care to all acutely injured patients and those requiring its specialized services.

It is committed to academic excellence in teaching and research, and strive to be leaders in the specialty of Trauma Care.

It wants to develop an environment that fosters personal and professional pride, satisfaction and growth.

Emergency Medicine in JPNATC, AIIMS

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the JPN Apex trauma Centre of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences started in 2007.

It takes care of approximately 100 acutely injured patients per day. The emergency department has a triage area, Red area, Yellow area and a green area.

It also has a minor Operation Theatre, Plaster Room. ED has trained manpower such as consultants, senior residents, junior residents, nurses and paramedics to take of the acutely injured.

The patient is wheeled in to the triage desk where the triage officer, based on the evaluation of ABCD triages to the Red area, Yellow area and the green area. Patients are treated as per ATLS protocol and ACLS if they are unresponsive.

ED Team: Role of each member isdefined with team concept in the ED .Triage Officer Grade –II nurse does the triage along with the JR Non Academic.

The red Area Team (RAT) which comprise of Team Leader, Emergency Physician -1, Emergency Physician-2, Emergency Physician-3, Nurse-1, Nurse-2, HA-1 and HA-2.

Education: All the emergency health care providers are trained in concept of triage, initial management of trauma (ATLS), team Concept, basic life support, ACLS, mass casualty drill, advanced hazmat life support.

The department holds a lecture series every Monday, seminars every Thursday, journal Club and simulation once a month and workshops once in 3 months.

There is a performance improvement and patient safety program once a month and Quality Assurance program twice a Month

Evaluation: Residents and nurse is being evaluated on monthly basis by peer review method so that strength and weakness of an individual can be assessed and rectified.

The department also examines education in Trauma under the ambit of Indo-US Emergency and Trauma Collaborative.

It also has a pivotal role in organizing workshops like airway management in Emergency Room & Emergency Sonography workshop

Research: CREST FORUM has been formed. This is a collaborative group of clinicians and basic scientist which will focus in research in emergencies, shock and trauma.

The research is especially focus on trauma inflammation biology and resuscitation in ED.
