IIST was built up in 2007 to encourage research situated towards Space Science and Technology furthermore to invigorate community oriented exploration with different units of ISRO and different foundations at a more profound scholastic level.

As a major aspect of this activity division of arithmetic was begun in 2007. It offers courses at undergrad and post graduate level for Aerospace and Avionics Engineering branches.

Department likewise runs an M.Tech program in Machine Learning and Computing.
