The Natural Language Processing activity of the CSE Department of IIT Bombay took off in 1996 with a grant from the United Nations University, Tokyo. This Natural Language Processing activity took for to create a multilingual information exchange system for the web. The project called Universal Networking Language was participated in by 15 research groups across continents. The Cognitive NLP lab was established as a part of Center for Indian Language Technology (CFILT) with a view to uncover the neuro-cognitive underpinnings of Human Language Processing.
