Established in 1959 the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the most seasoned in IIT Madras.

Academic Details

M.A. Program

The Department's remarkable five year incorporated program, propelled in 2006, prompts Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in two noteworthy streams - Development Studies and English Studies. Humanities and Social Sciences Research

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences has an energetic research group. Research subjects envelop fields as different as Agricultural Policy, Linguistics, German Studies, African/American/English/Indian Literature, Discourse Analysis, English Language Teaching, Economics, Health Care Policy, Philosophy, Sociology, Indian History and Theater and Film Studies.

The Department encourages inter-disciplinary research as well as admits students with diverse educational qualifications to the Doctoral Programme.

The Department is also occupied in a number of externally funded research projects. In the past, several agencies including the Central as well as State Governments, Indian Council of Social Sciences Research, the Wellcome Trust (UK), World Health Organisation, Department of International Development (UK), Green Peace, the World Bank, UNICEF, have also sponsored research projects.
