The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the oldest in Indian Institute of Technology IIT Madras. It was established in 1959.

The Department's essentially inter-disciplinary nature is its distinguishing factor.

The Department offers both Master's and Doctoral programmes, as well as electives for B.Tech and M.Tech students.

M.A. Programme-

The Department offer Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in two major streams - Development Studies and English Studies.

The M.A. programme reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of the fundamental concepts in humanities and social sciences.

Admission Procedure-

The students for the integrated Masters program at IIT-M are selected through the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) conducted by IIT Madras every year in the month of May.

The exam is highly competitive and only about 2 percent of the candidates taking the exam are finally selected for the course.

The present intake of the MA program is 45 students per year.

Ph.D. Programme

The DoHSS has a vibrant research community. Ph.D. admissions are carried out twice a year, in January and July.

The range of research topics encompasses fields as diverse as Advertising, Agricultural Policy, African/American/English/Indian Literature, Discourse Analysis, ELT, Economics & Econometrics, German Studies, Health Care, History, International Relations, Linguistics, Philosophy, Policy Studies, Science, Sociology, Theatre, Film and Media Studies, Technology and Development, and so on.
