Robotics has come a long way since the development of the first multi-jointed artificial arm by American inventor George Devol Jr in 1954.

This is a subsequent Programmable Universal Manipulator Arm (PUMA) by Victor Scheinman in 1975.

Its diverse areas are used for many robotic applications are for tasks that are unpleasant or hazardous for human beings, or for the performance of repetitive but high-precision tasks where human performance may degrade over time.
