The Fourth Hall of Residence was established during the early years of formation of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. It has been since then a residence for Post Graduate students of the institute. It has some of the best facilities available inside the campus. The Sports-room with Billiard Table, common room with a TV, a library, a canteen providing hygienic food and entertainment in form of a T. V, Quadrangle (lawn), Volley ball court, 2 Badminton courts and a basket ball court with the provision of floodlights and a Table Tennis room to satisfy all kinds of refreshment needs of the boarders. The mess has a spacious and well-ventilated dinning room, a well-equipped and hygienically maintained kitchen, and a cold storage room for perishable items and a storeroom for other items. The menu has popular dishes from different regions of India in order to serve the needs of the hall's mixed population. The residents are provided breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu for all the meals is decided by the mess-menu committee in consultation with the mess-management staff and based on the suggestions of inmates as well as seasonal requirements.
