Mechanical Engineering exercises at the Indian Institute of Science initiated preceding the Independence, in 1945, with the foundation of the Department of Internal Combustion Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering area of Power Engineering Department stuck to this same pattern in 1951, and later turned into an undeniable Department. The Department of Internal Combustion Engineering converged with the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1970. The classrooms, research centers and workplaces of the division are situated at the South-East end of the Campus in three structures — the Power Engineering Building, the TPS Building and the New Mechanical Engineering Building.

Research Areas

The Department's personnel explore a wide scope of research in around twelve push zones. A portion of the particular territories incorporate Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing, Rapid Prototyping, Robotics and Controls, Turbomachinery and Combustion Systems, IC Engines, Multi-Phase stream, Heat and Mass move in Multiphase and Single stage frameworks, Fundamental Combustion, Bio-mechanics, Nano-mechanics, Tribology, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Optical Diagnostics and Acoustics.

A great part of the examination is directed inside the division, however many tasks are completed as a team with different offices and focuses on grounds, and additionally with other R&D organizations and national research centers in the nation and abroad.

The Department is all around outfitted with cutting edge labs and infrastructural offices in these zones.
