Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), arranged at Thiruvananthapuram is a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. IIST works as a self-ruling body under the Department of Space, Government of India. The possibility of such a foundation was mooted remembering the requirement for excellent labor for the Indian Space Research Organization, one of world's driving logical associations occupied with space research and space applications. The foundation is the first of its kind in the nation, to offer superb training at the undergrad, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels on territories with unique concentration to space sciences, space innovation and space applications. IIST was formally initiated on 14 September 2007 by Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, the then Chairman, ISRO and was briefly housed in the premises of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, close from where ISRO manufactured and propelled its initially rocket. Both the establishing fathers of the foundation, Dr G Madhavan Nair and Dr B.N. Suresh, the last being the principal Director of IIST, assumed an essential part in the development of the foundation, encouraging its foundation and adding to its vision. Dr B.N. Suresh guided the establishment from the origination of the thought to its acknowledgment in a lasting grounds close Thiruvananthapuram in 2010. Conveying the mantle forward, the following Chairman, ISRO and Chairman, Board of Management, IIST, Dr. K Radhakrishnan and the second Director of IIST, Dr. K.S Dasgupta have been managing the foundation to accomplish its main goal of making a remarkable learning condition improved by the difficulties of the Space investigation, by sustaining the soul of advancement and innovativeness. Shri A.S. Kiran Kumar who accepted charge as Secretary, DoS in January 2015 and the present Director Dr V.K.
