India Meteorological Department was built up in 1875. It is the National Meteorological Service of the nation and the chief government organization in all issues identifying with meteorology, seismology and united subjects.

To take meteorological perceptions and to give current and conjecture meteorological data for ideal operation of climate delicate exercises like farming, water system, shipping, avionics, seaward oil investigations, and so on.

To caution against extreme climate marvels like tropical typhoons, norwesters, duststorms, substantial rains and snow, chilly and warmth waves, and so forth., which cause decimation of life and property.

To give meteorological insights required to horticulture, water asset administration, enterprises, oil investigation and other country building exercises.

To lead and advance research in meteorology and partnered disciplines.

To identify and find quakes and to assess seismicity in various parts of the nation for advancement ventures.

Organizational Structure in IMD

The Director General of Meteorology is the Head of the India Meteorological Department, with home office at New Delhi. There are 4 Additional Directors General at New Delhi and 1 at Pune. There are 20 Deputy Directors General of whom 10 are at New Delhi.
For the accommodation of authoritative and specialized control, there are 6 Regional Meteorological Centers, each under a Deputy Director General with base camp at Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi, Calcutta, Nagpur and Guwahati. Under the authoritative control of Deputy Director General, there are diverse sorts of operational units, for example, Meteorological Centers at state capitals, Forecasting Offices, Agrometeorological Advisory Service Centers, Flood Meteorological Offices, Area Cyclone Warning Centers and Cyclone Warning Centers.

Also, there are separate Divisions to manage particular subjects. They are: -

Agricultural Meteorology
Civil Aviation
Climatology
Hydrometeorology
Instrumentation
Meteorological Telecommunication
Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre
Positional Astronomy
Satellite Meteorology
Seismology
Training

IMD is under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
