The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) fills in as a provincial Institute for Training and Research in Population Studies for the ESCAP locale. It was set up in Mumbai in July 1956, till July 1970 it was known as the Demographic Training and Research Center (DTRC) and till 1985 it was known as the International Institute for Population Studies (IIPS). The Institute was re-assigned to its present title in 1985 to encourage the extension of its scholarly exercises and was proclaimed as an 'Esteemed University' in August 19, 1985 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The acknowledgment has encouraged the honor of perceived degrees by the Institute itself and made ready for promote development of the Institute as a scholastic foundation.

Other than instructing and research exercises, the Institute additionally gives consultancy to the Government and Non-Government associations and other scholarly establishments. Throughout the years, the Institute has helped in building a core of experts in the field of populace and wellbeing in different nations of the ESCAP locale. Amid the previous 53 years, understudies from 42 unique nations of Asia and the Pacific locale, Africa and North America have been prepared at the Institute.
