Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) is a self-governing peak statutory body. It controls and builds up the protection business in India.

It was constituted by Parliament of India vide Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act, 1999.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) had changed its name to Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.

The change of name was affected in the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Ordinance, 2014 was proclaimed by the President of India on December 26, 2014.

The statute contains certain alterations to the Insurance Regulation and Development Act, 1999 and embedded the words "of India" after advancement power.

As a consequence of this Amendment, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority has been renamed as Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India,'' it said in a discharge.
