The Union Cabinet approved giving IIT status to the Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad

On 10th of august 2016, I.S.M official converted into to I.I.T (I.S.M) Dhanbad.

ISM had been fighting for an IIT tag since 2013.

The institute was promised it would get the label so that it gets better placement opportunities, more research funds from the government, better opportunities for international collaborations, and a positive change in perception.

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad was ranked as the 7th best Engineering College of India in the Edu-Rand Rankings of 2015.

The survey was done jointly by Edu, an Indian company and Rand Corporation, a non-profit American think-tank.

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has been ranked at 201 position among BRICS nations' by QS World University Rankings in 2016.
