Re: JEE Main Admission Criteria

Central Board of Secondary Education, the exam conducting body for Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) Mains 2017, sets the eligibility criteria for the national level undergraduate engineering entrance exam for admissions to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

JEE Main 2017 Eligibility Criteria:

Date of Birth


One who was born on or after October 1, 1992 are eligible to apply.
One belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), should have been born on or after October 1, 1987.
One of these categories have been given a relaxation of 5 years.

Qualifying Exam
One should have passed 12th class or qualifying exam in 2015 or 2016.
One who is appearing in class 12th or qualifying exam in 2017 can also apply.

Total Subjects/Subject Combination
It is mandatory for one to have taken 5 subjects in 12th or qualifying exam

The 5 subjects for B. Tech/B.E. are:
1-Language,
2-Physics,
3-Mathematics,
4-Any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject),
5-Any other subject

General category candidates need to have scored minimum 45% marks, while 40 % marks is the criteria for one belonging to reserved category) in each of the subjects.

For B. Arch/ B. Planning, mathematics subject along with 50% marks in total including five subjects.

Total Number of Attempts
A JEE Main aspirant can avail 3 attempts for the national level undergraduate engineering entrance exam.

JEE Main 2017 list of qualifying examinations:
• The final exam of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized central/state Board like CBSE, ICSE, NCERT, etc.
• Intermediate or two-year Pre-University exam conducted by a recognized Board/ University
• Final exam of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy
• Senior Secondary School Exam conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with minimum five subjects
• Any Public School/ Board/ University exam in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
• H.S.C. vocational exam. [Only for Admission to IITs]
• A diploma recognized by AICTE or a state board of technical education of at least 3 year duration. [Only for Admission to IITs]
• General Certificate Education (GCE) exam (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level [Only for Admission to IITs]
• High School Certificate Exam of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva [Only for Admission to IITs]
