Karnataka State Open University Phd Courses

I have completed my PG degree and want to join Karnataka State Open University for doing Phd. Can you tell me the procedure to take admission in this University for the Phd course? Also provide me lists of faculty members available in this University for Phd?

The Ph.D. History Entrance Examination Syllabus for Department of Studies and Research in History of Karnataka State Open University is as follows:


Part A Research Methodology

1. Definitions - Nature and Scope of History - Subject Matter and Themes of History - Historys relationship with other Disciplines - Objectivity and Bias in History - External and Internal Criticism - Research - Steps and Methods of Research - Research Ethics - Paper, Article, Workshop, Seminar, Conference and Symposium, Thesis Writing.


2. Major trends in Historiography: Graeco-Roman Historiography, Christian and Medieval Islamic Historiography; Ancient and Medieval Indian Historical traditions; Modern thinkers (Vico, Herder, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Ranke and others ) - Modern Historians (Gibbon, Carlyle, Spengler, Toynbee, Durant and others) - Marxist Historiography - Annales School; Modern Indian Historiography - Colonial, Nationalist, Marxist, Cambridge, Anglo-American, Subaltern Schools of History writing - Historiography of Karnataka.


3. Sources of History - Different kinds of Historical Archives and Modern Archival Institutions; Sources of Indian History - Archaeological Sources - Literary Sources, Indigenous and Foreign Travellers - Numismatics - Epigraphy; Digital History - Digital Historical Archives - History and Computing.


4. Analytical Reasoning - Understanding the Structure of Arguments - Evaluating and Distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning - Verbal Analogies - Verbal Classification - Data Interpretation - Quantitative and Qualitative interpretation - Graphical Representation - Mapping of data.


5. Reading Comprehension - three passages and questions based on these passages to evaluate the ability to comprehend scholarly writing. Part B History of India, History of Karnataka and Modern World History


6. Ancient India: Indus Cities - The Age of Vedas, Upanishads and Epics - Buddhism and Jainism - Hinduism - Mauryan Empire - Guptas - Harsha - Sangam Age, Pallavas and Cholas - Art and Architecture of Ancient India - Society and Economy of Ancient India - Languages, Literature and Culture of Ancient India.


7. Medieval India: Arrival of Islam - Delhi Sultanate - Mughal Empire - Vijayanagar - Polity and Administration - Society and Economy - Art, Architecture and Cities of Medieval India - Islam and Sufism - Bhakti traditions and Indian thinkers.


8. Modern India: European Trading Companies in India (Portuguese, Dutch, English and French) - Colonialism and the Establishment of British Empire - Indian Resistance to Colonialism, including the Mutiny of 1857 - Indian Nationalism and Indian National Congress - Anti-colonial Movements - Gandhiji - Indian Constitutional Development - Indian Independence - Partition of India


9. History of Karnataka: Kannada Language, Script and Literature - Kadambas and Gangas - Chalukyas of Badami, Rashtrakutas and Chalukyas of Kalyana - Hoysalas, Vijayanagar and Mysore - Art and Architecture of Karnataka - Religious Traditions of Karnataka - Colonialism and Nationalism in Karnataka - Unification of Karnataka - Social Movements in Karnataka


10. World History - Modern Europe from French Revolution to World War II - Modern China from the Opium Wars to Mao Tse Tung - Modern Japan from 1850s to 1980s - History of America from 1760s to Cold War.


History Ph.D. Entrance Examination Curriculum consists of two parts: Research Methodology and Histories of India, Karnataka and Modern World. Each part will have five units each, for a total of ten units. Ten multiple choice questions will be asked from each of the ten units for a total of 100 questions.

Analytical Reasoning unit will follow the model of UGC NET test syllabus. Students can use the model questions provided in NET syllabus for what might be asked in this section.

Reading Comprehension section will consist of selected passages from both theoretical readings and historical scholarship. Students will be tested on their ability to understand different types of readings and answer given questions.
