The Department of Zoology in Gauhati University was established in 1963. It offer specializations in several major disciplines of Zoology (e.g. Animal Physiology and Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Entomology, Fish and Fishery Biology, Animal Ecology and Wildlife Biology) and also offers M Sc in Animal Ecology and Wildlife Biology.

It is recognized by the NAAC peer team as one of the best science departments of the University. It has been selected as FIST sponsored Department under DST (Govt. of India), Ministry of Science & Technology for building up the infrastructure for postgraduate teaching and research.
