IMDR was set up in 1974 as a constituent unit of the Deccan Education Society. It assumed control over the MBA system of the MBA Center of the University of Pune. In 1977 IMDR de-linked itself from The University of Pune to run the autonomus PGDM course, endorsed by AICTE and DTE since 2010.
