M.J.P. Rohilkhand University was built up in 1975 as an affiliating University. Its status was moved up to affiliating-cum-private college in 1985 when four showing Departments were set up in the campus. In 1987 three more Departments were included. In August 1997 Rohilkhand University was renamed as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University.

The University has taken a general point of view of improvement plan and in this manner adjusted University status by including new Faculties of Engineering and Technology, Management, Applied Sciences, Education and Allied Sciences and so forth. It has more than 215 associated schools.
