Paper 1: Advanced Research Methodology

a) Syllabus

Unit I

Concept of Research, Basic and Applied Research, Meaning of Communication Research,
Nature and scope of Communication Research, Various stages of Communication Research;
and Print, Electronic and New Media Research, Advantages of Communication Research.

Unit II

Review of Relevant Literature, Defining Research Problem, Identification of Research
Objectives, Formulation of Hypotheses, Research Design, Study Area, Study Sample, Types
of Sampling-Probability and Non-probability sampling, Tools of Primary Data Collection,
Statistical Analysis, SPSS package, Testing of Hypotheses

Unit III

Types of Communication Research – Observation, Survey Research, Historical Research,
Content Analysis, Experimental Research, Case Study, Ratings and Non-ratings Research

Unit IV

Research Report Writing, Principles of Writing Research Report, Chapterisation, Techniques of presentation of findings, Drawing of inferences, submission of implications of the study, suggestions for future research, bibliographical references.

b) Modalities

1. The courses work shall consist of tutorial, seminar and assignment.
2. During the period of 16 weeks, 32 hours of tutorial (4 hours in a week) and 32 hours of
Seminar presentation shall be arranged by the guide concerned.
3. The assignment shall be decided by the guide concerned for necessary evaluation for the
course work.
4. The Internal Assessment marks shall be equally divided for both seminar presentation (25
marks) and assignments (25).
