Nirma University is an autonomous university which functions under the aegis of the Nirma Education and Research Foundation (NERF). It is a statutory university established under a state act.

It is consistently ranked among the top 10 private universities in India. Among many other rankings, it in 2014 was ranked as the 6th best university among the top 25 universities in India by Higher Education Review and 3rd among the top private universities by The Week.

It has been awarded with the 'Best University in Use of Technology in Teaching-Learning Practices’ award in the 3rd CMAI CCI Technology Education Excellence Awards 2015. The Award was given during the Afro-Asian Conclave organized by Global Business Studies of Gujarat Technological University and CMAI Association of India on July 17, 2015
