Paper Pattern for IIT JEE

Can you provide me the paper pattern of Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) Main Exam as I need to know before attempting for it?

The paper pattern of Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) Main Exam is as follows:

JEE Main Exam Pattern – Paper-I (For B.Tech/B.E)


• Mode of Examination:
It is held in both Computer Based (CBT) mode and Pen and Paper Mode (P&P).
One needs to choose the option for the mode of examination during the registration.

• Language:
The question paper of JEE Main is available in English and Hindi language.
The residents of Daman & Diu, Nagar Havel, Gujarat and Dadra given Gujarati as a language option and candidate of Maharashtra could also write the paper in Urdu or Marathi.

• Time Limit:
One has 3 hours to solve all the questions in the exam.
However, one with physical disability of, or above, 40% will be allotted an extra hour to finish the exam.

• Sections:
There are 3 sections of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the JEE Main question paper.

• Question Type:
There are 30 questions in each section and it will be of Multiple Choice Type.

• Marking Scheme:
The marking scheme of the exam is +4 and -1/4.
This means that 4 marks will be awarded for marking the correct answer and for marking the incorrect answer 1/4 marks is deducted.

JEE Main Exam Pattern – Paper II (For B.Arch/B. Planning)

• Mode:
The question paper, for Paper-II, is only available in offline mode.

• Sections:
There are three sections of Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Drawing.

• Questions:
The Aptitude and Mathematics section carry 40 and 30 MCQ’s, respectively.
Whereas, the Drawing section consist of 7 questions and candidates need to attempt any 2.

• Marking Scheme:
The marking scheme is the same as that in Paper-I.
