Punjab Technical University was established by an act of State Legislature on 16 January 1997

The University is recognized under section 2(f) of UGC act and offers programs only as per nomenclature defined by UGC.

PTU is a member of AIU (Association of Indian Universities)

PTU degrees are recognized world over including certification by NARRIC for Britain.

Degrees and Diplomas are recognized for equivalence and lateral entry by New College Nottingham, City college Norwich, Birmingham City University, University College Birmingham.

MSC-IT of PTU is rated equivalent to Masters Degree in Britain.

At present University have 121 AICTE and 65 UGC institutes affiliated with it.

KG-PTU has been given recognition by University Grant Commission for running Distance Education Programme.
