Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) is a programme conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) India, to train in the undergraduate program in mechanical engineering at the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Jamalpur.

The selected candidates are called for an interview, which is followed by a medical examination.

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Special Class Railway Apprentices, Examination as per Regulations given in Appendix-II of the rules for the Special Class Railway Apprentices, Examination published in Gazette of India.

Medical examination of candidates for appointment to Gazetted Railway service includes :-

(i) general physical examination
(ii) vision tests

General Physical examination:-

To be passed as fit for appointment, a candidate must be in good mental and bodily health and free from any physical defect likely to interfere with the efficient performance of his duties of appointment.

The minimum standard for height and chest girth of male and female candidates should be as follows:-

The following additional points should be observed:-

that the candidate's hearing in each ear is good and that there is no sign of disease of the ear. In case it is defective, the candidate should be got examined by an E.N.T specialist provided that the defect in hearing is remediable by operation or by use of hearing aid, a candidate cannot be declared unfit on that account provided he has no progressive disease in the ear that the speech is without impediment

That his/her teeth are in good order and he/she is provided with dentures, where necessary, for effective mastication ( well filled teeth will be considered as sound);

That the chest is well formed and chest expansion sufficient; and that his/her heart and lungs are sound;

That there is no evidence of any abdominal disease;

That he/she is not having a hernia;

That the candidate does not suffer from hydrocoele, varicose veins or piles;

That his/her limbs, hands and feet are well formed and developed and that there is free and perfect motion of all joints

That he/she does not suffer from inveterate skin disease;

That there is no congenital malformation or defect;

That he/she does not bear traces of acute or chronic disease pointing to an impaired constitution;
