The University of Mysore was set up on 27th July, 1916 amid the considerate rule of the Maharaja of Mysore, His Highness Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar (1884-1940). The beginning of the University of Mysore stems from a five year long top to bottom perusing and examination on advanced education over the globe. The mission of the University of Mysore, set down in the 1916 directions distributed in the Mysore Gazette Extraordinary, goes for 'advancing instructing and research in routine and customary areas of Arts, Humanities, Pure and Applied Sciences and Professional orders'.

India was on the limit of administration training when University of Mysore set up the Department of Business Administration in 1974 attributable to the dynamism of the then Vice-Chancellor Prof. D. Javare Gowda and Dr.J.K Irani, Professor of Commerce. The immense jump forward came in 2002 when, Mr. B.N. Bahadur a former student of the University and President of the B.N. Bahadur Family Foundation of Michigan, U.S.A made attractive gift, which together with commitment from the University made "B.N. Bahadur Institute of Management Sciences" (BIMS) . The University gave Honorary Doctorate on B.N.Bahadur in 2007.
