International Centres of University of Madras ICOM was established in 2003, following the UGC's Promotion of Indian Higher Education Abroad (PIHEAD).

The ICOM aims to be a 'single window' for international students.

The international students at the University of Madras hail from:

USA, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Mauritius, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Fiji, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, etc.

They have a well-equipped office situated in the nerve centre of the University in ground floor of the Library Block.

The Institute offers quality academic programmes for international students.


International students are generally exempted from the entrance /selection examination and Departments of the University of Madras are encouraged to fill the international students quota assigned to each department [15% supernumerary quota]

Foreign candidates are to be FULL TIME CANDIDATES

Candidates for the doctoral programme must have 17 years study

55 percent marks in PG

Bhutanese, Nepalese and Tibetan students do not have passports; they have official id cards giving their status.

SAARC countries students have 40% discount of tuition fees.
