University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) was established in the year 2003 through UPES Act, 2003 of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand.

UPES is the only Asian University to receive the World Oil Award.

UPES emerged as an innovative institution offering 85 industry-focused specialized programs in key areas such as Energy, Infrastructure, Transportation, Information Technology, and Legal Process.

The University has been expanding its offerings in the sectors like Information Technology, Transportation, Public Policy, Design, Architecture, Business and Legal Studies.

UPES Dehradun, established through an act of the State 2003, is an endeavor of Hydrocarbons Education and Research Society.

The University provides multidisciplinary and specialized courses in oil and gas, transportation, power, computer science, information technology, international business, logistics and supply chain, infrastructure, Public Policy, Design and Legal Studies.

It became a part of the Laureate International Universities network in 2013.

It is the First Indian Energy University approved by UGC Under Section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956
