The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been declared by Act of Parliament as institutions of national importance.

The Government plans to set up more AIIMS-like institutes, tertiary care centres for cancer and state-level cancer institutes across the country.

Seven more AIIMS were announced to be set up in Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, 2 in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Bihar.
