The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is a public engineering institution established by the government of India in 1951. It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India.

The VEICET (Vodafone Essar-IIT Centre of Excellence in Telecommunications) MOU made between the IIT Kharagpur, Vodafone-Essar Ltd, and Goverenment of India on October 16, 2007.

Area of Research and other steps to progress the collaboration was finilized on July 2, 2008.

The TCOE is a part of G S Sanyal School of Telecommunications (GSSST) with faculty from the Institute.
