The XTNDAccess IrDA USB Adapter interfaces with a desktop PC's USB port; empowering infrared information exchange between a Windows CE gadget and the desktop PC. XTNDAccess exchanges information at an inconceivably quick 4Mbps with an operational scope of 3 feet (1 meter) between the units. It bolsters both infrared correspondence standard 1.1 and quick infrared (FIR) conventions. The unit is little, about the extent of golf ball, with a 4-foot line that attachments into the USB port of the desktop PC. XTNDAccess accompanies programming, including a document trade program. It coordinates with the desktop rendition of Windows and permits ActiveSync (Windows CE) and HotSync (Palm OS) to utilize the IR association with synchronize information. Install XTNDAccess on your desktop PC: First, install the Adapter Software on your desktop PC. (The software is on a CD that comes with XTNDAccess.) Then plug the IrDA Adapter cable into your desktop PC's USB port, usually found on the back of the computer. (A serial-port version of XTNDAccess is also available from Extended Systems.) If the installation was successful, a light at the top of the adapter will blink as it searches for an infrared signal. That's all there is to it. 2. Configure ActiveSync for infrared communication: Before a file can be transferred or synchronized, you have to configure ActiveSync on your desktop PC. From ActiveSync's File menu select "Connection Settings." Make sure you check the box labeled "Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port." Then, from the drop down menu select "Infrared Port (IR)." (Note: If you are connected to your desktop PC via USB or Ethernet connection, the drop down menu will be grayed out. You will not be able to select from it until you disconnect your Pocket PC from the USB cable or data cradle.) 3. Line up the infrared ports and sync: The infrared port on your Pocket PC is found on the top edge of the unit. Point that at the XTNDAccess infrared port (the bulge on the end of the cable). Make sure the two IR ports are within 3 feet of each other and that nothing is in between them blocking their line-of-sight wireless communication. Next, turn on your Pocket PC, tap on the Start menu and select "Programs" and then "Connections." Tap the icon labeled "IR ActiveSync." A box will appear on the screen indicating that the Pocket PC is searching for an Infrared Connection. A series of high-pitched beeps sound when connection is established. Afterwards, the synchronization will begin. Should something interfere with the beam, a low-pitched alert will sound. Bring the unit back within range quickly and the synchronization will resume. When finished, move the unit away from the IrDA adapter. The low-pitched alert will sound, but stop after a few seconds. XTNDAccess makes data synchronization and file transfer easier for the Pocket PC user. And because it works with Windows CE and Palm OS, it's an ideal solution for individuals with multiple PDAs. No more swapping connectivity cables. XTNDAccess also communicates with infrared-equipped digital cameras and cell phones. The ability to quickly transfer a digital image from a digital camera to the desktop is a good example of the usefulness of this product. |
