Telangana University was established through Act Number 28 of the State Government in 2006 to make the higher education accessible to the educationally backward District of Nizamabad in Telangana.

It is the third largest University next only to Osmania University (Hyderabad) and Kakatiya University (Warangal) in Telangana State.
