Yes you are eligible to apply for the Income tax officer exam after engineering; the Staff Service Commission conducts an entrance exam annually for the recruitment of candidates in the income tax department. Following are the details of it:

Eligibility:
The applicant should have completed graduation with good academic record from any recognized university of India.

Age limits
21years to 30years

Paper pattern:
Tier I (200 marks – duration 2 hours)
(a) General Intelligence & Reasoning - 50 marks
(b) Gen.Awareness - 50marks
(c) Quantitative Aptitude – 50 marks
(d) English Comprehension – 50 marks

Tier II (400 marks)
(I) Quantitative Abilities – 200 marks (100 Questions) – 2 hours
(II) English Language & Comprehension – 200 marks.

Pay Grade: For Inspector: Rs.9300/- to Rs.34800/- per month.
For Tax Assistant: Rs. 5200/- to Rs. 20200/- Per month.
For Notice Server: Rs. 5200/- to Rs. 20200/- Per month.
Multitasking Staff: Rs. 5200/- to Rs. 20200/- Per month.
