Re: LSAT Purpose

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a half-day standardized test administered four times yearly at designated testing centers throughout the globe.

Administered by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) for prospective law school candidates, it is designed to assess reading comprehension, logical, and verbal reasoning proficiencies.

The test is an integral part of the law school admission process in the United States, Canada (common law programs only), the University of Melbourne, Australia, and some other countries. One can only take the LSAT three times within 2 year period.

The purpose of the LSAT is to aid in predicting student success in law school. The LSAT measures the ability to read and comprehend complex texts, manage and organize information, and process information to reach conclusions. In addition to the required reasoning abilities, it measures the examinee's speed, accuracy and skill at planning, discipline, and mechanics.

There are three multiple-choice question types in the LSAT:

• Reading comprehension questions measure the ability to read, with understanding and insight, examples of lengthy and complex materials similar to those commonly encountered in law school.
• Analytical reasoning questions measure the ability to understand a structure of relationships and to draw logical conclusions about that structure.
• Logical reasoning questions assess the ability to analyze, critically evaluate, and complete arguments as they occur in ordinary language.

Test Format
The test consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions.
Four of the five sections contribute to the test taker’s score.
These sections include one Reading Comprehension section, one Analytical Reasoning section, and two Logical Reasoning sections.
The un scored section, commonly referred to as the variable section, typically is used to pre test new test questions or to pre equate new test forms.
The placement of this section will vary. Identification of the un scored section is not available until receive score report.

A 35-minute, un scored writing sample is administered at the end of the test. Copies of writing sample are sent to all law schools to which apply.
