Armed Forces Medical College was set up on 01 May 1948 and is a premier medical institute of India recognized as a centre of excellence for education and research. It provides training to under-graduate and post-graduate medical and nursing with assured career prospects in defence services.

Its affiliated hospitals include Command Hospital (Southern Command), Military Hospital (Cardio Thoracic Centre), Artificial Limb Centre and Military Hospital (Khadki).

Medical Journal Armed Forces of India (MJAFI) is a professional journal sponsored by the Armed Forces Medical Services and published by the AFMC.

It is presently affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. In 2013 India Today Rankings, it was ranked third among medical colleges in India. Outlook India also ranked it at #2 in 2012 and 2015. It was ranked 2 by Careers360 in 2016.

It is the only medical college apart from Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, in Asia where all expenses are paid by the Government (Ministry of Defence).

Here, Medical Cadets receive free tuition, free lodging and boarding, uniforms, book subsidies and an allowance for upkeep of the uniforms.
