Re: Bone Marrow Transplant Aiims Delhi

As per your request here I am providing you the details of bone marrow transplant at aiims Delhi.

The Department of Hematology was established in January 1989.
It is a unique department with clinical and laboratory faculty working together under one roof together. It is the only department of its kind in the country. It provides clinical facilities in the OPD, day care centre and for indoor patients.

Bone marrow transplant is a procedure performed for a variety of serious life threatening conditions. The source of stem cells may be from the bone marrow or the blood . When a HLA matched brother or sister donates the stem cells it is called allogeneic transplant or allo- transplant.

Stem cell transplant, a process by which new cells are introduced into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury, has shown promise in treating various kinds of diseases, including some cancers. However, there are only 10-11 centres in India where it can be done, says Lalit Kumar, professor of medical oncology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here.

Costs:

A stem cell transplant can cost up to Rs.1 crore (approx $223,000) abroad, depending on the type of procedure, and the patient is asked to deposit the full amount before the transplant.

In comparison, in India it costs Rs.10-20 lakh in private hospitals, while in government hospitals it is much cheaper - Rs.3-6 lakh - depending on the type of procedure
