Kakatiya University was built up on August 19, 1976. It's foundation satisfied a since a long time ago appreciated desire of the general population of Telangana. The University started with just four Departments, viz. Telugu, English, Chemistry and Mathematics in 1968, Departments of Physics, Botany, Zoology, Commerce and Public Administration were included later.

The University has been named after the considerable Kakatiya Dynasty which led this district with Warangal as capital amid the twelfth and thirteenth hundreds of years which guaranteed political strength, financial success, phonetic and social solidarity.

It has now around 321 schools (171 old govt. supported, private unaided degree schools, 66 new universities in 2005, 48 B.Ed. schools, 14 drug store schools, 3 law schools, 3 designing schools, including Kothagudem Engineering College, 11 college PG universities, 29 universities offering MBA, and 32 schools offering MCA), situated in the Northern Telangana locale of Karimnapr, Khammam, Adilabad and Warangal offering various projects at the Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Research levels in Professional and additionally Non-Professional courses.
