Re: Courses Needed For Archeology

Physical geography has a lot in common with archaeology because it encourages you to look closely at different landscapes. Science subjects like physics and chemistry are good if you want to work in archaeological science and research, especially geophysics. Maths is useful for surveying and other on-site skills. English helps you to tell the story of the archaeology and would be especially useful if you want to work in museums or archaeological education. However it is still useful if you want to be an archaeologist because it will help you learn about how life has changed and how the past is interpreted and presented to the public.

Archaeologists are social scientists who conduct excavations to recover, study and preserve such artifacts as ancient ruins, tools and ceramics.
Individuals interested in becoming an archaeologist must first enroll in a 4-year bachelor's degree program at an accredited university. To gain admission into such an institution, an applicant must first typically have a high school diploma. College freshman interested in declaring a major in archaeology should first complete general education courses in science, mathematics, communication, history and social sciences.

Core courses might include:
• Prehistoric archaeology
• History of archaeological thought
• Archaeological skills
• Human osteology
• Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
• Archaeological methods and research design
• Archaeology of ritual and religion
• Social and cultural anthropology
• Human origins
• Historical archaeological sites
• Ancient art and archaeology
