Academic activities in the region of electronic digital computers were begun in Jadavpur University under the ETCE Department in the mid sixties and it got a major fillip in 1962, when the ISIJU venture was attempted in the Department as a team with the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta, to plan and assemble ISIJU-1 PC was fabricate and dispatched in 1966 and the accomplishment of this spearheading venture incited the U.G.C. to endorse a Computer Center in Jadavpur University. The Center was given sufficient assets as far as work force, types of gear, books, frill, building space, investigate partnership, and so on and it began offering, from 1968, a one-year P.G. Certificate course in Computer Science with an admission of 20 understudies from all finished India.

The MCA program of the University, which was begun under the Science Faculty amid 1988-89 session, was gotten to the Computer Science and Engineering Department from the 1989-90 session.

Research Activities

The Department has intension to make a field where the understudies can investigate and thrive their imagination in this present reality. All most every one of the instructors are associated with such research or task situated works. The office has three research and preparing focuses :CAD focus, CMATER, Center of Distributed Computing.

The division, alongside five different branches of the University, effectively takes an interest in the exploration and instructive exercises led by Center for Mobile Computing and Communication. The middle is built up in 2003 under the U.G.C supported “University with Potential for Excellence” program.

At present, two push territory ventures, viz. Place for Microprocessor Application for Training, Education and Research (CMATER) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) Center are proceeding in the office. CMATER was made by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MGRD), Govt. of India, amid the sixth arrangement time frame. The goals of the Center are to prepare instructors of a portion of the doled out building schools/colleges and to set up infrastructural offices for giving preparing and completing exploration and formative exercises in microchip and united fields.
