DART: Dataset Acquisition accessibility & annotation e-Research Technologies.

Data Cleaning: Deleting or editing corrupt or erroneous parts of data, to maintain data integrity

Data Curation: The process of managing data, from its creation through all its various stages, to ensure it is accessible and useable

Data Deposit: Committing data to a repository/storage facility

Data Encryption: Encoding/modifications to data to protect it from forms of unauthorised access

Data Ingestion: Transferring data to a repository or other form of archive

Data Integrity: The state of complete, accurate and error-free data

Data Mining: Applying algorithms for the Identification of non-trivial patterns from large data sets, using HPC

dCache: Disk pool management system

Data Protection: Management and processing of data which identifies individuals involved.

Data Set: A specific collection of data having common elements

Data Service: An online digital repository relating to a particular discipline/area

Data Steward: An employee responsible for the life cycle of a set of research data, such as the Principal Investigator (PI) of a project

DBI: Department of Business and Innovation (Victoria)

DBMS: Data Base Management System; a DBMS is computer software that manages databases

DEEWR: Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (Australia) (Defunct; now the Department of Education and Department of Employment)

Digital Migration: Transferring data from one format or software platform to another

Digital Preservation: The set of processes, activities and management of digital information over time, ensuring long-term accessibility

Digital Repository: A facility for secure storage and reliable access to data

DIISR: Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (Australia)

DOI: Digital Object Identifier; A name which provides a means of persistently identifying a digital object. This could be a data set - which could then be dynamically related to current data in a structured manner

DPI: Department of Primary Industries (Victoria)

DPM: Disk Pool Manager

Embargo: A period in which access to research data is not permissible for certain users. This is either to protect the revenue of the actual publisher or the interest of a research group or organisation
