Patna University was set up in the year 1917 and it worked as affiliating and looking at body for more than 30 years. On January 2, 1952 it was changed over into a simply instructing - cum-private University with the regional purview over Metropolitan Patna. It is one of the most seasoned Universities in the Country.

The Patna University has 31 postgraduate divisions in the resources of Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Commerce, Law and 10 constituent schools, aside from Patna Medical College and Patna Dental College in the Faculty of Medicine whose administration and control are with the State Government. There are 4 Institutes kept up by the University e.g. Foundation of Psychological Research and Services, Institute of Public Administration, Institute of Music, and Institute of Library and Information Science.
