Re: Purpose of GMAT

The Graduate Management Admission Test GMAT is a computer adaptive test (CAT) intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program like - MBA.

It requires knowledge of certain specific grammar and knowledge of certain specific algebra, geometry and arithmetic. As per the test owning company, the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), it assesses analytical writing and problem-solving abilities, while also addressing data sufficiency, logic, and critical reasoning skills that it believes to be vital to real-world business and management success.

GMAT Measure

The GMAT seeks to measure four broad skill areas: analytical writing, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and integrated reasoning (which embrace analytical, quantitative, and verbal reasoning). The exam gauges these skills through four discrete components, presented in the order listed here:

A 30-minute Analytical Writing Assessment (one writing task)

A 30-minute Integrated Reasoning section (12 multiple-choice questions, most of which are multi-part)

A 62-minute Quantitative section (31 multiple-choice questions)

A 65-minute Verbal section (36 multiple-choice questions)

For each of the four exam sections, a separate scaled score and percentile rank are awarded. A combined Quantitative/Verbal score (called a Total score) and corresponding percentile rank are also awarded. The GMAT is not a pass/fail test.

Good GMAT Score

Percentile Total GMAT Score

Top 10% of all test takers 710

Top 25% of all test takers 650

Top 50% of all test takers 580

Below 50th percentile of all test takers 570
